The Artist
Astrid Dodd is a contemporary visual artist based between Zandvoort, the Netherlands, and Hamburg, Germany. Her work explores the relationship between cultures, landscapes, and the emotional connections people form with places over time. Through a distinctive sculptural language, Astrid creates layered compositions that merge abstract forms with architectural elements, resulting in works that are both visually interesting and deeply tactile.
At the core of her practice is a highly experimental process. Each wall sculpture is built on a handmade frame, where numerous layers of plaster pleats are carefully constructed and shaped. By altering the direction, depth, and rhythm of these pleats, Astrid creates a dynamic interplay of light and shadow that shifts with the viewer’s perspective.
Color plays an equally important role in her work. Astrid has developed her own pigmented acrylic paint mixtures using powdered pigments sourced from around the world, applying them layer upon layer while subtly adjusting the tone of each successive coat. This meticulous process produces a rich, light-absorbing surface with a velvety, suede-like quality that enhances the sensory experience of the work.
Astrid earned her Diploma from the KLC School of Design in London. Her work has been exhibited in international galleries and group exhibitions, and her wall sculptures have been featured in numerous international publications.
Drawing inspiration from a life lived across different countries and cultures, as well as from personal experiences and observations of architecture, Astrid explores how places influence our memories and emotions. Through texture, color, and continual experimentation, she creates immersive works that invite both contemplation and a desire for touch.
